How can I get paid safely for my services?    Back to Top

We hope all our buyers are reputable, decent, and honest and we want all our members to enjoy safe meetings and transactions over the internet. However, it is sensible, particularly for women working alone, to take the same precautions you would in any other walk of life. For example:
  • Do not let a stranger into your house or business premises until you have verified their identity, and do not let anyone in when you're alone unless you are sure you can trust them.
  • Do not go alone to someone else's house on your first visit. Take a friend or family member along with you until you feel comfortable with the relationship.
  • If at any point you feel uncomfortable with the buyer, let them know and ask them to leave, or leave yourself.

Are there any scams I should look out for?    Back to Top

There are many internet scams around and it is well worth keeping up-to-date with these through sites such as www.getsafeonline.org. Traders are particularly at risk from 'overpayment' scams where a cheque is made out for more than the required amount and the customer asks for a refund of the difference. If the cheque subsequently bounces, you will have not only lost your payment, but also the extra cash you gave as a refund.

Is it better to ask for payment up front?    Back to Top

It is not unreasonable to ask for a small deposit or an advance payment to cover the cost of materials. However, it's unwise to ask for more than this as many customers may become suspicious and withdraw from the transaction. You have to trust your customers, so it is best to reassure yourself of their legitimacy before you start. If in doubt, pull out!

Should I give the buyer my personal details?    Back to Top

SetYourRate.com provides a safe environment for selling safely over the internet as all emails are routed through our internal messaging system without your personal details being revealed. However, once you're satisfied that your buyer is genuine you may have to give them some personal details, such as your address or telephone number, so that you can progress with the transaction.

How can I reassure my potential customers?    Back to Top

Naturally, new customers will have concerns about working with a stranger. However, you can put them at their ease with a few simple steps:
  • Always carry identification to prove who you are when visiting customer's homes.
  • Be prepared to have someone else present as a chaperone if required.
  • Ask satisfied customers for references and carry them with you.
  • Don't ask customers to put themselves in a position you would not be happy with yourself, such as meeting you alone after hours.
